SUBJECT:
A/C COMPRESSOR OIL REQUIREMENTS
FOR R134a SYSTEMS
THIS TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN REPLACES ADVANCE TECHNICAL INFORMATION NOTICE ATIN-93-55-001.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
For 1994, all Mitsubishi Motor Sales of America (MMSA) vehicles (including some 1994 Eclipses built from 2/94) are equipped with A/C systems using R134a refrigerant. The A/C compressor oil used in R134a systems is called PAG (polyalkylene glycol) oil. PAG oil is chemically different than the oil used in R-12 A/C systems.
PAG oil IS NOT compatible with the mineral-based oils used in R-12 A/C systems. In addition, the PAG oil used in MMSA vehicles IS NOT compatible with PAG oils used in other vehicle manufacturer's R134a A/C systems.
DESCRIPTION
1994 MMSA vehicles equipped with R134a A/C systems use one of two types of PAG oil, depending on the type of system installed. Because these two PAG oils ARE NOT compatible, it is important to know which PAG oil is used in which A/C system. Refer to the application chart.
PAG OIL INFORMATION
R134a A/C compressors are shipped pre-filled with the correct quantity of PAG oil. Additional oil should not be required during A/C installation procedures.
To avoid contaminating the A/C system during installation and servicing, lubricate the A/C O-rings with the same PAG oil used in the vehicle's system.
Any recovery/recycling equipment that is U.L. approved for servicing R134a automotive A/C systems may be used on 1994 MMSA vehicles equipped with R134a systems. Cross-contamination of A/C compressor oils should not occur if the equipment is used correctly.
PARTS INFORMATION
PAG-56 and ND-OIL-8 are available through your facing PDC on a stock or daily order basis. Be sure to order the correct PAG oil for the correct vehicle application.
