Trailing Arm: Service and Repair
RemovalFig. 3 Removing Suspension Assembly From Body:
1. Remove coil spring as outlined under COIL SPRING.
2. Disconnect brake hoses at suspension arm, then remove suspension assembly from body, Fig. 3.
Disassemble

Before disassembling, place alignment marks on suspension arms and components so they can be assembled in the same position. On models equipped with stabilizer bar, make alignment marks on stabilizer bar and stabilizer bracket.
1. Remove nuts on both ends of suspension arm, then remove fixtures and rubber bushings.
2. Remove dust cover clamp and slide dust cover to right, being careful not to damage it.
3. Separate suspension arm into right and left arms.
4. Using screwdriver, remove bushing ``A'' from left-hand suspension arm, Fig. 4.
5. Using a drift punch, drive bushing ``B'' from left-hand suspension arm, Fig. 5.
6. Inspect all components for wear or damage, replacing as necessary.

1. Apply specified grease to inside of left suspension arm and on outer edge of right suspension arm. If dust cover was replaced, push new dust cover up to stopper positioned on right arm before applying grease.
2. Install rubber stopper on right suspension arm.
3. Apply specified grease to inner edges of bushings ``A'' and ``B.''
4. Using bar tool No. MB990779 and installer attachment tool No. MB990780, or equivalents, press fit bushing ``B'' into left suspension arm until bushing reaches bottom of suspension arm, Fig. 6.
5. Using bar tool No. MB990780 or equivalent, install bushing ``A'' on left suspension arm, Fig. 7.
6. Wrap tape on threads of right suspension arm to prevent grease from getting on them and fit right and left suspension arms together, wiping away any grease that comes out.
7. After fitting suspension arms together, mount rubber bushings, fittings, and washers, Figs. 8 and 9.
8. After aligning suspension arm and components according to alignment marks, torque nut to 58-72 ft. lbs.
9. Pack specified grease in dust cover and lip, then secure with new clamp.
Installation
Reverse removal procedure to install, paying attention to different shapes of upper and lower spring seats. Ensure proper coil spring is being installed by painted identification mark on spring.
