C. Fuel Pump Inspection

1. Disconnect the fuel pump harness connector located at the rear of the fuel tank.
2. Start the engine and run until the fuel supply stops and the engine stops.
3. After the engine stalls, turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
4. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
5. Install fuel pressure test adapter MIT210204 to the fuel rail and tighten securely. Then install fuel pressure test gauge MIT210196 to the adapter.
6. Connect the negative battery terminal.
7. Reconnect the fuel pump harness connector.

8. Apply battery voltage to the fuel pump drive terminal to activate the fuel pump.
9. With fuel pressure applied, ensure that there is no fuel leakage from the pressure gauge or the connections.
10. Start the engine and allow to idle. Disconnect the vacuum hose at the pressure regulator and plug the hose end.
11. Check the fuel pressure. The fuel pressure at idle with the vacuum hose disconnected should be 46 - 49 psi.

12. Connect the vacuum hose to the pressure regulator and recheck the fuel pressure. The fuel pressure at idle should now be 39 psi.

13. If the fuel pressure measurements made in Steps 11 and/or 12 are not within specifications, use the table to determine the probable cause and make the necessary repairs/replacement.

14. Stop the engine and check for a fuel pressure change. The fuel pressure should remain within 5 psi for approximately five minutes before dropping. If it does not, make the necessary parts replacement as determined by the table as shown:
15. Remove the fuel pressure test gauge and adapter from the fuel rail.

16. Apply battery voltage to the fuel pump drive terminal to operate the fuel pump. Check for any fuel system leaks. Repair any fuel system leaks as required.
17. Reset the clock and radio stations.
18. Proceed to the I.D. Plate and Underhood Label Instructions section of this bulletin.
