M/T - Intermittent Rattle Noise, New Design Spring
NO.: TSB-93-22-003DATE: August, 1993
MODEL: See below
SUBJECT:
REVERSE BRAKE SPRING
PURPOSE
This bulletin describes the differences in reverse brake wave spring design used in F5M31 and W5M31 manual transaxles. A new design reverse brake wave spring was incorporated in vehicles manufactured after February 1992. The new design spring is slightly thicker and stronger than the original design spring. This increased thickness can reduce the possibility of the reverse brake ring touching the reverse brake cone and creating a rattle noise when the engine is running.
The new design reverse brake wave spring should be used on earlier vehicles if you encounter a transaxle rattle noise caused by reverse brake cone touching the reverse brake ring.
Diagnostic hint:
Typically when a reverse brake ring contacts the reverse brake cone, the rattle noise will go away when the engine is running and vehicle is shifted into any gear at a stop, then return when shifted into neutral with the clutch engaged. The noise can also be present when operating the vehicle in any gear except reverse.
AFFECTED VEHICLES
1989-92 Galant
1990-92 Eclipse
1992 Expo
Vehicles manufactured after February 1992 have the new design reverse brake wave spring installed in the transaxle.
