Fig. 11 Removing Driveshaft:
Fig. 13 Wheel Bearing Washer & Locknut Installation:
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove battery and battery tray.
3. Remove air cleaner assembly.
4. Drain transaxle fluid as outlined under MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/CHANGING FLUID.
5. Remove transaxle assembly in numbered sequence shown in Figs. 14 and 15, noting the following:
a. On Expo models, support engine using engine hanger tool No. MB991191 or equivalent.
b. Loosen, do not remove, tie rod end assembly nut using steering linkage puller tool No. MB991113, or equivalent. Ensure to tie cord of special tool to nearby parts to prevent slippage.
c. Loosen, do not remove, lower ball joint nut using steering linkage puller tool No. MB991113, or equivalent. Ensure to tie cord of special tool to nearby parts to prevent slippage.
d. Use puller tool No. MB990241-01, or equivalent to push righthand driveshaft from front hub.
e. Insert a pry bar between transaxle case and driveshaft and pry driveshafts from transaxle, Fig. 11. Do not pull on driveshaft as damage to the joint will result.
f. Remove lefthand driveshaft by lightly tapping driveshaft joint case with plastic hammer.
g. Secure driveshaft away from the transaxle case using suitable rope to prevent damage.
h. Mark location of propeller shaft on rear axle flange then remove attaching bolts from propeller shaft at rear axle flange.
i. Disconnect propeller shaft center support bearing and bracket.
j. Pull propeller shaft from transfer assembly.
k. Remove transfer assembly attaching bolts then the transfer assembly.
6. Reverse numbered sequence shown in Figs. 14 and 15 to install transaxle, noting the following:
a. Ensure to install washer and wheel bearing nut in direction shown, Fig. 13.
b. After installing wheel, lower vehicle to ground and finally tighten wheel bearing nut. If position of cotter pin holes do not match, torque nut up to 188 ft. lbs. maximum to align holes.
c. Ensure all electrical connections and ground connections are clean and tight.
d. Refill transaxle with fluid as outlined under MAINTENANCE PROCEDURES/CHANGING FLUID.
e. Ensure proper operation of selector and control cables. Adjust if necessary.
