Starter Motor: Service and Repair

Removal

1. Disconnect battery cables, then remove battery and battery tray.
2. Disconnect speedometer cable from transaxle.
3. On models equipped with 1.8L/4-107 engines, remove intake manifold stay.
4. On all models, disconnect starter wiring connections.
5. Remove starter mounting bolts, then the starter.

Installation

1. Before mounting starter, clean the mating surfaces of starter and the engine.
2. Install starter and torque mounting bolts to 20-25 ft. lbs.
3. Connect starter wiring connections.
4. On models equipped with 1.8L/4-107 engines, install intake manifold stay.
5. On all models, connect speedometer cable.
6. Install battery tray and torque attaching bolts to 6-10 ft. lbs.
7. Install battery and battery hold-down. Torque hold-down bolts to 1.5-2.0 ft. lbs.
8. Connect battery cables.
