Ignition - Timing Adjustment, Manual Change

NO. TSB-91-16-001

DATE February, 1991

MODEL 1990-1991 Eclipse

SUBJECT: IGNITION TIMING ADJUSTMENT ON

4G63 (2.0L DOHC) ENGINES

TSB Revision TSB-91-16-001

PURPOSE

This bulletin describes a change to the ignition timing adjustment and inspection procedures on Eclipse vehicles equipped with 4G63 (2.0L DOHC) engines which make use of the stepper motor type idle speed control. As reference to this bulletin, please make the changes shown and write the TSB number in the TSB revision boxes at the bottom of the affected Service Manual pages.

DETAILS OF CHANGE

Whenever the ignition timing is adjusted or base timing checked, the Multi-Use Tester MUST BE DISCONNECTED from the diagnostic connector. The ignition timing adjustment connector must be grounded to instruct the MPI computer to set the timing to a base value.

When the Multi-Use Tester is connected to the diagnostic connector, it grounds a terminal in the diagnostic connector under the dash. This forces the MPI control unit to control base idle speed and stepper motor position, and override the timing adjustment connector. To set base timing the Multi-Use Tester MUST be disconnected from the diagnostic connector.

If checking idle speed along with engine timing, do not use the Multi-Use Tester. A tachometer must be connected to the engine revolution speed detection terminal provided in the engine compartment.
