Intercooler: Description and Operation
Intercooler And Components:
The intercooler is a heat exchanger designed to increase intake air density by removing excess heat from the intake air charge. Cooling the intake air increases the air density and the efficiency of the combustion mixture, this helps to reduce combustion chamber temperature. As a result occurance of engine ping is suppressed, allowing higher boost pressures and increasing engine output. The Intercooler is mounted in the fresh air stream (ahead of the right fenderwell), in the piping between the turbocharger and the throttle body, where it can most effectively remove the heat generated during turbocharging.
