2.0L TURBOCHARGED ECLIPSE
EMISSION RECALL
This bulletin supercedes EMR-92-004 dated January 1992, which should be discarded.
PURPOSE
This bulletin provides a detailed procedure for inspection and repair of the emission control system on certain 1991 and 1992 2.0L turbocharged California Eclipse models. A letter has been sent to all owners of the affected vehicles telling them to return their vehicles to their Mitsubishi Motors dealer to have the engine serviced.
Please note that the customer is not to be charged for the repairs covered by this bulletin. To achieve the desired results, the procedure MUST be followed EXACTLY as described in this bulletin.
IMPORTANT NOTICE
All dealerships MUST perform all steps as described in this bulletin. Incomplete repairs will lead to emissions non-compliance and obvious customer dissatisfaction. The California Air Resources Board ("CARB") may survey the results of this campaign several months after starting. If incomplete repairs or non-compliance is found, another recall could be ordered or other action undertaken by CARB. In addition, California residents who own an affected vehicle may be required to send in a Vehicle Emission Recall - Proof of Correction form to the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) as evidence of recall completion when they apply for vehicle registration renewal each customer whose vehicle is registered within California MUST be given a completed Vehicle Emission Recall - Proof of Correction form after the recall has been completed.
AFFECTED VEHICLES
This procedure applies to 1991 and 1992 California 2.0L turbocharged California Eclipse models equipped with manual or automatic transmissions without limitation as to mileage. It does not apply to any other models.
NOTE: 1992 turbocharged Eclipse models produced from September 6, 1991, beginning with VIN 4A3CT64U8NE030682, have been corrected during vehicle production. Therefore, perform this recall on 1992 models built prior to this VIN.
REQUIRED OPERATIONS
1. Replace the Oxygen Sensor.
2. Complete and affix the "Emission Recall Completed" label.
3. Clear any diagnostic codes stored in the MPI system's ECU using the Multi-Use Tester.
4. Complete a Vehicle Emission Recall - Proof of Correction form.

Required on each claim. No other parts are allowed to be claimed.
WARRANTY INFORMATION
Submit as Recall Claim type "C", Menu option "E-5" on your Diamond Network System. Do NOT submit as "W" claims!

Time allowance: 0.2 hr.
Note: The "O" in the above labor code is the number ZERO.
MATERIALS AND SPECIAL TOOLS REQUIRED
This new oxygen sensor uses a ceramic type insulating material which withstands a higher temperature. This makes the new sensor 10 mm longer than the one being removed (Figure 1).
* You MUST use Oxygen Sensor wrench number MD998748-01 (Figure 2).
CAUTION: Do not use the oxygen sensor removal wrench MD998770-01 which has a split on the side (Figure 3).
* Multi-Use Tester.
* Penetrating oil.
