Lifter / Lash Adjuster: Testing and Inspection

LASH ADJUSTERS CHECK

If an abnormal noise is heard from the lash adjusters, check as follows:
1. Operate engine to normal operating temperature.
2. While installed to cylinder head, press part of rocker arm that contacts lash adjuster.
3. If, when pressed, rocker arm is very hard to be depressed adjuster is operating correctly.
4. If, when pressed, rocker arm is very easily depressed replace lash adjuster.
5. If there is a spongy feeling when pressed, air is mixed in with engine oil. The cause is insufficient amount of engine oil or damage to oil screen and/or gasket.
6. After finding and correcting cause, warm engine and drive at low speed for a short time. Then, after stopping engine and waiting a few minutes, drive again at low speed. Repeat this step to bleed air out of oil system.
