Fuel Injection System

Injector Locations:

The fuel injection system system is controlled by the ECU to maintain the air fuel mixture at 14.7:1 (best mixture for catalyst operation). The system operates sequentially, in other words, each injector opens corresponding to the intake stroke of each cylinder. The Fuel Injection Control System consists of the ECU, four fuel injectors and various sensors. The ECU uses the information from the sensors to determine the correct amount of injector duration (the amount of time the injector nozzle is open, allowing fuel to enter the cylinder). The fuel injection control system provides for an enriched mixture during cold starts and also provides compensation during deceleration (turns fuel injection off) and at high altitudes (leans out mixture).

Injector:

The injectors are solenoid operated valves, installed in the intake manifold. When the solenoid coil is energized, the plunger is retracted. The needle valve that is attached to the plunger is therefore pulled to the full open position and fuel is injected through the valve. When the solenoid is de-energized spring pressure closes the valve.
