EGR Control Solenoid: Description and Operation

EGR Solenoid Valve Location:

The EGR Solenoid Valve is an electromechanical, vacuum switching valve. When the ECU senses conditions suitable for EGR operation, it supplies the ground circuit to the solenoid. The plunger in the solenoid moves, closing the vent port. This allows ported vacuum to be applied to the EGR valve. The ECU reads the voltage signal from the coolant temperature sensor and determines when to allow EGR valve operation.
NOTE: The EGR valve on federal and Canadian models is controlled by a thermo-vacuum valve. Refer to EMISSION CONTROLS for information.
