Camshaft: Service and Repair
Fig. 35 Camshaft, Rocker Arm & Rocker Arm Shaft:
Removal
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Disconnect accelerator cable from throttle body.
3. Remove timing belt as outlined under TIMING BELT.
4. Using a screwdriver or suitable tool, remove camshaft oil seals, Fig. 35. Use caution not to damage front camshaft bearing caps or camshafts.
5. Loosen camshaft bearing cap bolts in two or three steps, then remove bolts and bearing caps, If bearing caps are difficult to remove, use a plastic hammer to lightly tap the rear part of the camshaft, then remove bearing caps.
6. Remove intake and exhaust camshafts.
7. Remove rocker arms.
Installation
Fig. 36 Camshaft Bearing Cap Identification Marks:
Fig. 37 Camshaft Bearing Cap Bolt Tightening Sequence:
1. Install rocker arms.
2. Apply engine oil to journals and lobes of camshafts, then install camshafts on cylinder head. Ensure camshafts are correctly installed. The intake camshaft has a slit on the rear end for driving the crankshaft angle sensor. Also ensure dowel pins on sprocket ends are positioned on the top.
3. Install camshaft bearing caps. Bearing caps 2-5 are the same shape. Check identification marks on bearing caps to determine correct location, Fig. 36. On 1990 models, ``L'' indicates intake camshaft side; ``R'' indicates exhaust camshaft side and on 1991 models ``I'' indicates intake camshaft side; ``E'' indicates exhaust camshaft side. No. 1 bearing caps are marked only ``L'' or ``R'' on 1990 models and ``I'' or ``E'' on 1991 models. Ensure rocker arms are correctly mounted on lash adjusters and valve stem ends.
4. Tighten camshaft bearing caps in sequence shown in Fig. 37, in two or three stages by torquing progressively. Tighten to specifications in the final sequence.
5. Install guide tool No. MD998307-01 or equivalent, on camshaft, then apply oil to camshaft oil seal and insert the oil seal along the guide tool until it contacts cylinder head. Using installer tool No. MD998306-01, press oil seal into cylinder head, then remove the tools.
6. Install camshaft sprockets, torquing attaching bolts to specifications.
Fig. 38 Aligning Crankshaft Angle Sensor Mating Marks:
7. Install crankshaft angle sensor as follows:
a. Position dowel pin on intake camshaft on the top.
b. Align punch mark on crankshaft angle sensor housing with notch in plate as shown in Fig. 38.
c. Install crankshaft angle sensor on cylinder head. Tighten attaching nut to specifications. Ensure crankshaft angle sensor does not turn when tightening attaching nut.
8. Reverse remaining procedure to complete installation, noting the following:
a. Ensure camshaft and crankshaft timing marks are correctly aligned.
b. Tighten auto tensioner bolt to specifications.
c. Tighten timing cover bolts to specifications.
d. Tighten tensioner pulley bolt to specifications.
e. Tighten crankshaft pulley bolts to specifications.
f. Tighten water pump pulley bolts to specifications.
g. Tighten engine center cover and rocker cover bolts to specifications.
h. When installing rocker cover, apply 3M sealant No. 8660 or equivalent to semi-circular packing.
i. Check and adjust ignition timing to specification as necessary.
