PURPOSE
This bulletin provides a quick check procedure for seat belts that are inoperative or will not retract smoothly into the retractor before replacing any seat belt assembly, use this check procedure to reduce unnecessary seat belt replacement.
CHECK PROCEDURE
1. Pull the seat belt out of the retractor until it is fully extended.
2. While holding the belt fully extended, inspect the belt to see if it is twisted at any point. Remove all twists in the belt and then see if the belt retracts smoothly.
3. If the seat belt will still not retract, check to see if a foreign object (paper hair pin, etc) is stuck in the retractor. An object should be removed from the retractor only if the retractor does not have to be dissassembled to do so, DO NOT DISSASSEMBLE THE RETRACTOR TO REMOVE AN OBJECT.
4. If the above steps have been performed and the seat belt still does not retract smoothly, replace the seat belt assembly.
