PURPOSE
This bulletin provides detailed procedures for repairing the emission control system of certain 1987 Precis California certified models equipped with a two-solenoid carburetor. A letter has been sent to owners of the affected vehicles telling them to return their vehicles to their Mitsubishi Motors Dealer to have the engine serviced. A copy of this letter is shown on Page 7 of this bulletin.
Please note that the customer is not to be charged for the repairs covered by this bulletin. All procedures are specified by the California Air Resources Board. Therefore it is important that the procedures be followed EXACTLY as described in this bulletin.
IMPORTANT
Failure to perform all Recall procedures outlined in this bulletin completely and accurately may lead to emissions non-compliance, customer dissatisfaction, and in some cases require another recall. Confirm that you are using the proper Technical Service Bulletin repair procedures and service kits for the vehicle model year and engine size that you are working on. Service procedures and kits are different even though some vehicles may look alike.
AFFECTED VEHICLES
All 1987 California certified Precis vehicles are being recalled. The procedures specified in this bulletin apply to 1987 California 1.5L Precis models with a vacuum regulator valve. There is no limitation as to mileage. It does not apply to any other models or to vehicles without a vacuum regulator valve.
NOTE: Repair procedures for California Precis vehicles that do not have a vacuum regulator valve are covered in EMR-90-006.
MANDATORY REPAIRS
The repair procedures cover the following, regardless of the vehicle's age or mileage:
1. Clean the carburetor choke plate, primary and secondary main air jets.
2. Check the voltage between the oxygen sensor body and the hood latch bolt. If the voltage test indicates that repairs are necessary, install a ground wire.
3. Enter your dealer code, recall campaign number, and affix the Emission Recall Completed label.
