PURPOSE
If a customer should request correction of surface blemishes on his new vehicle - minor scratches, specks of dust or lint, or similar small imperfections in the exterior finish - this can often be performed without sending the vehicle to the body shop. This bulletin describes a system that is available for this purpose.
DESCRIPTION
The 3M Company "Finesse-It" System is a system for removing dust specks, lint, and minor scratches from a car's finish. This system is described in the affected brochure, which was supplied by the 3M Company. The "Finesse-It" kit is available locally from auto body shop supply houses carrying the 3M line.
Smoothing of minor surface imperfections quickly and competently can improve customer satisfaction because the customer's complaint can be resolved on the spot in a short time and with very little cost or inconvenience. The 3M system provides one means of doing this with a minimum of training or experience.
SANDING: Using water, sand defect lightly and evenly with a circular motion. Do not finger sand! Restrict sanding to a spot as small as possible...without gouging or dimpling.
BUFFING: Now, remove the sanding scratches by putting a "nickel" size drop of 3M FINESSE-IT Finishing Material on area. Next, smear material evenly with pad before starting tool. Using our exclusive ROLOC System start wheel and keep pad flat against area. ..use slow random or circular motion with "medium" cutting pressure for 10 seconds...then reduce pressure for 3 seconds to get maximum gloss. Tools of 1500 to 2500 rpm with medium to low torque are preferred!
CLEAN-UP: Simply wipe residue from area using a clean cotton cloth with water...use a circular motion with a firm positive pressure...and that's all there is to it...A uniform glossy final finish in seconds!
