Quarter Window Glass: Service and Repair






51 36 066 Removing And Installing (Replacing) Rear Right Side Window







Special tools required:
- 00 9 322
- 51 3 010







IMPORTANT:
- The "Instructions on window bonding" serve as the basis for this repair instructions and must be observed without fail.
- Cover rear side panels with protective covers.

NOTE: Removal is performed with Roll Out 2000. Work cab only be carried out with an oscillating knife.







Necessary preliminary work:
- Remove B-pillar cover on side window
- Remove root trim strip
- Remove cover on roof pillar at rear
- Remove strip on side window

Version with TV function:
- Remove trim panel for roof pillar (C-pillar)







Version with TV function:
Disconnect plug connection (1).
Secure cable with adhesive tape (2) to side window.

IMPORTANT: Pay attention to cable (2) when cutting in this area.







IMPORTANT:
- Risk of damage.
- Tape off body in area of piercing point with fabric adhesive tape.

Push wire starter from Roll Out 2000 at line (1) through adhesive bead.







IMPORTANT:
When reusing side window:
- Avoid damaging the aerial wires.







Replacement:
Secure side window against falling down.

Tape off side window and body flange all round with fabric adhesive tape (e.g. Tesa).

Fit U-shape knife (see graphic RX51 0848) (sourcing reference BMW Parts Department) to tool.

Regrind blade with a grinding stone while machine is running (new blades also).

Guide blade carefully between body and side window.

Guide blade parallel to rear window and cut through adhesive bead as closely as possible to side window.

Remove the side window with a special tool 51 3 010.







Only replace:
Use different U-shape knife for areas (A to C).

A = 36 mm
B = 36 mm (longer knife permissible)
C = 24 mm

Areas which are not reached with the blade must be worked on with a scalpel (for heavy-duty applications).







Fitting 4 Dual Lock tapes:

IMPORTANT:
- To avoid window glass breakage and leaks:
- Completely remove remnants of Dual Lock tapes (1) and maintain installation position exactly.

Stick new Dual Lock tape (1) on mark to body.

Dual Lock tapes on side window must match these Dual Lock tapes.







IMPORTANT:
- Version with rear window aerial:
- Do not allow any adhesive to come into contact with the connector contacts of the rear window aerial.

Overview for side window bonding, rear right (R55):







Attach two special tools 51 3 010 to tool trolley. Moisten suction faces and secure side window. Secure additional special tool 51 3 010 with moistened suction faces to side window.

When reusing the existing side window, remove residual adhesive to 0.5 mm.

If necessary, remove remainder of Dual Lock tape (9). Clean bonding surface and stick on new dual lock tapes (9).

Attach retaining strip (7) and cover (8) on side window.

Almost vertical part of adhesive bead (1) must be facing side window edge (5).

Spread bead joint (4) with special tool 00 9 322.







Firstly fit side window (1) bottom with special tool 51 3 010 with retaining strip (2) then fold in at the top.

Align side window (1) to body in accordance with dimension (A).

A = 2 ± 0.5 mm

Press side window (1) on body and engage in Dual Lock tapes.

Fix side window (1) in position with yellow plastic adhesive tape (sourcing reference: BMW Parts Department).
