31 60 004 Removing and installing/replacing right output shaft
Necessary preliminary work:
- Release right collar nut as described in Removing and installing/replacing left output shaft.
- Remove track rod end from swivel bearing on right.
- Remove wheel control joint from swivel bearing on right.
- Manual gearbox only: Drain and catch transmission oil.
Press right swivel bearing outwards.
Drive out output shaft (1) by striking thread gently with plastic hammer.
Unfasten screws (2).
Tightening torque 31 60 1AZ
IMPORTANT: The shaft seal must be replaced in the gearbox each time the output shaft is removed.
Lever output shaft (1) out of transmission and remove.
IMPORTANT:
Different types of output shafts fitted.
Do not mix up circlips.
Installation note:
Replace circlip.
Installation note:
Insert assembly guard (1) into shaft seal.
Assembly guard (1) is provided with new shaft seal for output shaft.
Make sure the tool fits over the shaft seal lip so that the sealing ring is not damaged when the output shaft is inserted.
Installation note:
Insert output shaft (1) into gearbox.
Before sealing surface is pushed into shaft seal, remove assembly guard (2) by pulling on handle.
Slide output shaft into gearbox up to stop.
Output shaft coupling must snap audibly into place. Check secure seating by levering.
After installation:
- Manual gearbox only: Add transmission oil.
The vehicle must be parked on a level surface in the workshop to fill the transmission with oil.
- Check gearbox for leaks
