Removing and Installing/Replacing Rear Muffler

18 12 030 Removing and installing or replacing the rear silencer (N12, N14, N16, N18)





Warning!
Risk of burning!
This repair work may only be carried out on an exhaust system which has cooled down.





Necessary preliminary work:
^ N57 only:
Remove the cross reinforcement.





Disconnect the exhaust pipe with a suitable tool at the marked points and deburr.

The interface (1) for rear silencer is designated by a notch in the pipe.

Note:
If the separation point is not marked by a punch mark in the pipe, determine the separation point by means of the pipe length on the new rear silencer.

Carry over separation point to faulty rear silencer and mark.

Secure rear silencer against falling off.

Cut through exhaust pipes at marked point with a suitable tool.

Important!
Risk of damage!
Secure exhaust pipe of rear silencer against falling down with assistance of a second person.





Spray rubber mount (1) with lubricant and detach from rear silencer (2).

Note:
Illustration shows and text refers to the right rubber mount. The procedure is identical for the left side.

Lower and remove rear silencer with assistance of a second person.





Installation note:
Connect rear silencer to front silencer by means of a clamp.

Align rear silencer to rear apron.

Align clamp and tighten down.

Tightening torque 18 31 6AZ.





Note:
Check exhaust system for leaks.
