51 45 072 - Removing and installing instrument panel with carrier





Necessary preliminary tasks:
- Move wheels into straight-ahead position
- Clamp off battery negative lead 61 20 900 Disconnecting and Connecting Battery Negative Lead
- Remove trim panel for roof pillar at front left and right Removing and Installing/Replacing Trim for Roof Pillar at Front (A-pillar), Left or Right
- Remove entrance cover strip at front left and right
- Remove storage compartment 51 16 200 Removing and Installing Storage Compartment
- Remove rear center console heater trim 51 16 160 Removing And Installing/Replacing Centre Console Trim
- Remove glovebox cover 51 16 365 Removing and Installing/Replacing Glovebox Lid
- Remove cover for air outlet vent cover at side left and right,
see Air outlet vent cover 51 45 430 Removing and Installing/Replacing Cover For Air Outlet Vent on Left (or Right)
Note:
On version with storage compartment or CD changer no removal of decorative trim on right.
- Remove lower section of steering column trim 32 31 020 Removing and Installing/Replacing Lower Section of Steering Column Trim
- Remove operator unit for heater/air conditioner Service and Repair
- If necessary, remove solar sensor Service and Repair
- If necessary, remove CCC (Car Communication Computer) 65 83 010 Removing and Installing/Replacing Car Communication Computer





Disconnect plug connections (1) to (3) on A-pillar on left.





Disconnect plug connections (1) to (4) on A-pillar on right.





Release cable (1) for handbrake switch.





Disconnect plug connection (1) for airbag control unit.





Unclip wiring harness (1) on cockpit and center console.





Remove steering column 32 31 090 Removing and Installing/Replacing Steering Column
(complete with steering wheel, airbag, steering column switch cluster)





Disconnect plug connection (1) on A/C unit (2).





Unclip wiring harness (1).
Detach cooling hose (2).





Release screws (1) above steering column.





Unfasten screws (1) to (3).





Unfasten screws (1) to (3).





Release screw (1) on left below A/C control panel.





Release screw (1) on right below A/C control panel.





Important!
Use a stepped drill bit with a large diameter for the following operations, otherwise the background will be damaged in the case of the 20 mm dia. access holes.





Drill a 20 mm dia. access hole (2) as described in the following on the left next to the opening (1) for the A/C control panel.





Determine and mark center of access hole as follows:
1. Align edge of impression (1) to side.
2. Distance to flank (2) - (A) = 14 mm.
Release screw that becomes visible behind access hole.

Installation:
Seal access hole with plug.

Drill 20 mm dia. access holes on left (1) and right (2) in glovebox opening as described in the following.





Left access hole:
Determine and mark center of access hole as follows:
1. Distance to flank (1) - (A) = 16 mm.
2. Distance to profile corner (2) - (B) = 26 mm.





Release screw that can be reached from front through access hole (1) at an angle.

Installation:
Seal access holes with plugs.

Right access hole:
Determine and mark center of access hole as follows:
1. Align edge of flank (1) downwards.
2. Distance to upper flank (2) - (A) = 58 mm
Release screw that becomes visible behind access hole.

Installation:
Seal access hole with plug.
Part Number 51 71 1 801 066





Release retaining angles (1).
Release side screws (2) and (3).
Pull off instrument panel complete with carrier.
