Removing and Installing/Replacing Exhaust Camshaft



11 31 028 Removing And Installing/replacing Exhaust Camshaft (N16)

Special tools required:







IMPORTANT:
It is absolutely essential to follow an exact procedure for removing and installing the exhaust camshaft.
Modified procedure for timing adjustment.
All pistons are in the 90° position.
Risk of damage.







Necessary preliminary tasks:
- Remove cylinder head cover.
- Remove vacuum pump.
- Remove exhaust adjusting unit for exhaust camshaft.
- Release central bolt of intake camshaft adjuster.







IMPORTANT:
The screws of the bearing bracket must not be opened.
Releasing the bearing bracket will result in damage to the cylinder head.







IMPORTANT:
Risk of damage to spark plug bores.
Check special tool 11 9 652 for damage.

Secure special tool 11 9 650 on cylinder head with screws 1 in spark plug holes.







IMPORTANT:
Release bearing caps with special tool 11 9 650 only.
Shown without special tools for purposes of clarity.

Release bearing cap screws from 10 to 1.
Set all bearing caps down in special tool 11 4 480 in a neat and orderly fashion.







IMPORTANT:
Both camshafts have different identifications.
Mixing up the two camshafts will result in engine damage.
EX Exhaust camshaft.
IN Intake camshaft







Plastic plain rectangular compression ring:

Installation note:
The plastic plain rectangular compression ring is maintenance free and does not have to be replaced.

Insert plastic rectangular compression ring (1) into groove of exhaust camshaft (2) (see arrow).
Lightly oil plastic rectangular compression ring (1) and rotate in direction of arrow until compression ring (1) is positioned on the exhaust camshaft.







Check plastic plain rectangular compression ring (1 and 2) for freedom of movement.







IMPORTANT:
Removal on engine:
Block engine with special tool 11 9 590.
Removed cylinder head:
When using special tool 11 9 000, it will be necessary to remove the aluminium strip.







Installation note:
Before installing exhaust camshaft, ensure that roller cam follower arm is correctly seated on the hydraulic valve clearance compensating element and valve.







Installation note:
Lubricate all bearing points with engine oil.
Insert camshaft (1).
Pay attention to installation position (2).







IMPORTANT:
Both camshafts have different identifications.
Mixing up the two camshafts will result in engine damage.
EX Exhaust camshaft.
IN Intake camshaft

Designation (EX) on exhaust camshaft points upwards.







Make sure plain rectangular compression rings (1) can move freely.
Lubricate all bearing points (2) with engine oil.







Secure special tool 11 9 650 on cylinder head with screws 1 in spark plug holes.
Pre-tension camshaft (2).
Fit and secure bearing brackets.







Bearing brackets, allocation of exhaust camshaft from (0 to 4).







Fit all bearing brackets from 0 to 4.
Secure screws in sequence (1 to 10).
Tightening torque: 11 12 8AZ.


NOTE: Shown without special tool 11 9 650 for purposes of clarity.







Adjust valve timing.
Assemble engine.
