Engine/Engine Controls - Change In Thermostat and Wire Harness

SI M12 06 12
Engine

June 2012
Technical Service

SUBJECT
Change in Thermostat Electrical Connector on Replacement Engine Harness

MODEL
All models with N16 built up to 3/2012

SITUATION
Vehicles produced 3/2012 and later are no longer equipped with an engine coolant thermostat that incorporates the engine coolant temperature sensor. The engine coolant temperature sensor is now an individual component.

To accommodate this component change, there was also a production change to the engine wiring harness; this also includes the replacement engine harnesses for earlier produced vehicles. The replacement harness is no longer equipped with the four pin connector for the thermostat / engine coolant temperature sensor, but two separate two-pin connectors, one for the coolant thermostat and one for the engine coolant temperature sensor.

PROCEDURE
When replacing the engine harness for applicable vehicles with the N16 engine produced prior to 3/2012, the engine thermostat must also be replaced (first harness replacement only).

Refer to Repair Instruction 11 53 000, "Removing and installing or replacing coolant thermostat (N16)."
