MODEL
R55 (Cooper Clubman and Cooper Clubman S) with N14 engine

R57 (Cooper and Cooper S Convertible) with N14 engine
SITUATION
An oil leak can develop from the timing chain tensioner mounting location.
CAUSE
The timing chain tensioner surface, which contacts the seal ring mating surface, is not machined correctly.
AFFECTED VEHICLES
This Service Action involves R55, R56 and R57 vehicles with the N14 engine which were produced from June 7th, 2010 to July 23rd, 2010.
In order to determine whether a specific vehicle has had this Service Action or Recall Campaign completed or is affected by this Service Action, first check the B-pillar label for code number 49. If code number 49 has been punched out, the campaign has already been performed. If code number 49 has not been punched out, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of DCSnet (Dealer Communication System) or the Key Reader. Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.
PROCEDURE
Replace the timing chain tensioner with P/N 11 31 4 609 483 and the seal ring per Repair Instruction REP 11 31 090.
Note:
A new timing chain tensioner seal ring is included with the new timing chain tensioner part number listed above.

LABEL INSTRUCTIONS
This Service Action has been assigned code number 49. After the vehicle has been checked and/or corrected, obtain a label (MD20-040) and:
A. Emboss your BMW center warranty number in the middle of the label (1);
B. Punch out code number 49 (2), printed on the label; and
C. Affix the label to the B-pillar as shown.
If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one, because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
