Check Clutch

Checking The Clutch

Complaint while the clutch is open
Rattling noise or scraping.

When the clutch is opened, the transmission is completely separated from the engine. If noises can be heard from the area of the transmission, the clutch is not separating correctly.

1st measure
In the event of a complaint, localize the cause in accordance with the following diagnostic aid:
See also Service Information: transmission difficult to shift.

If it is difficult to engage 1st gear, hold the gear lever at the resistance point (after approx. half of the total path), applying light constant force. Then switch off the engine with the other hand (ignition off).

Observations on 1st measure
- Observation 1
If 1st gear can be fully engaged with the engine off, i.e. the gear lever slides into the end position without additional pressure, there is a clutch problem.
- Explanation:
When the engine is turning, a clutch that detaches poorly means that the drive shaft of the transmission transfers residual torque. This residual torque makes it more difficult to disengage and engage the sliding sleeve after the end of the synchronous operation. The stationary engine means the drive shaft is free of torque. This simulates a fully detaching clutch.

- Observation 2
If the gear lever remains at the point of resistance with the engine stationary, the problem lies in the outer gearshift or in the transmission.

2nd measure
The vehicle must be on a level surface; the engine must be running at idle; and the clutch must be opened. From the neutral position, press the gear lever slowly towards 1st gear up to synchronization of the gear. Press the gear lever against the synchronization. If there is a clutch problem, the vehicle moves slowly.

NOTE: In all probability, there is no transmission problem.
