Exhaust Systems

January 2009
Technical Service

This Service Information bulletin supersedes SI M18 01 08 dated September 2008.

PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES BEFORE CUSTOMER DELIVERY OR THE NEXT TIME THEY ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS.

Under the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 1966, as amended, if there has been a recall campaign, dealers must assure that all new vehicles and new items of replacement equipment are free of safety defects and comply with all applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards at the time of delivery to the consumer. This means that dealers may not deliver new motor vehicles or new items of replacement equipment to consumers unless the safety defect or noncompliance has been remedied before delivery.

SUBJECT
[NEW] Safety Recall Campaign 08V-657: R56 Cooper S - Replacement of Tailpipe Extensions

MODEL
R56 Cooper S with N14 engine produced 11/06 up to 07/08

SITUATION

Due to production assembly tolerances combined with thermal expansion, the tailpipe chrome tips may extend beyond the rear bumper edge.

Contacting the hot tailpipe tips may cause burns on the exposed parts of shins and/or calves.

A copy of the customer notification letter is shown in this bulletin.

AFFECTED VEHICLES
[NEW] This Recall Campaign involves R56 MINI Cooper S vehicles with N14 engines which were produced from 11/06 - 07/08.

[NEW] In order to determine whether a specific vehicle is affected by this Recall Campaign, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System) or the Key Reader. Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The chassis number ranges shown above are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.

CORRECTION

Replace the exhaust tailpipe tips with the updated parts (PN 18 30 7 595 688).

PROCEDURE

1. Loosen the tailpipe tips hold down bolts (see arrows). Remove the exhaust tips.

2. Push the replacement tailpipe chrome tips up to the stop on both tailpipes. (The tailpipe tips must bottom out on the tailpipes.)

3. Retighten the tailpipe tips hold down bolts torque specification = 3.5 Nm (2.6ft.lb).

Important:
MINI Cooper S vehicles equipped with the dealer-installed accessory JCW Kit already have the modified exhaust system. The chrome extensions are the integral part of the tailpipes (welded), and they do not protrude beyond the rear bumper skin.

In such a case, perform a visual inspection only and close the open campaign in DCSnet, using Work Operation # 2.

LABEL INSTRUCTIONS

This Recall Campaign has been assigned code number 39. After the vehicle has been checked and corrected, if necessary, obtain a label (MD20-036) and:

a. Emboss your MINI dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);

b. Punch out code number 39 printed on the label; and

c. Affix the label to the B-pillar as shown.

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one, because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
