Technical Service

This Service Information bulletin supersedes SI M34 03 08 dated October 2008.

PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES BEFORE CUSTOMER DELIVERY OR THE NEXT TIME THEY ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS.

Under the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 1966, as amended, if there has been a recall campaign, dealers must assure that all new vehicles and new items of replacement equipment are free of safety defects and comply with all applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards at the time of delivery to the consumer. This means that dealers may not deliver new motor vehicles or new items of replacement equipment to consumers unless the safety defect or noncompliance has been remedied before delivery.

SUBJECT
[NEW] Recall Campaign 08V-507 : Check Front Brake Rotors

MODEL
R56 (Cooper S JCW)
R55 (Cooper S Clubman JCW)

SITUATION

The potential defect involves the front brake rotors/discs. Some vehicles may have been equipped with 16-inch diameter front brake rotors instead of 17-inch rotors. Under severe braking conditions, braking performance would be reduced. However, sufficient braking capability would still be maintained to slow and stop the vehicle.

AFFECTED VEHICLES

This [NEW] Recall Campaign involves Cooper S John Cooper Works and Cooper S Clubman John Cooper Works vehicles which were produced from May 7, 2008 to August 1, 2008.

In order to determine whether a specific vehicle is affected by this [NEW] Recall Campaign, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of DCSnet (Dealer Communication System) or the Key Reader. Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The Chassis Number Ranges shown above are only for informational purposes, and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.

PROCEDURE

The front brake rotors can be inspected without removing the wheels.

Use a clean lint-free shop rag to wipe away any dirt or debris which may have collected on the rotor's inner hub.

Looking through the spokes of the wheel, check the part number stamped into each of the front rotors. The part number of the rotor is stamped along the inner hub after the minimum thickness value (for example, MIN TH 20.4 mm 6 784 366).

If the part number 6 784 366 is stamped on the rotors, then no further action is required.

If the part number cannot be determined, measure the gap between the outer edge of the front rotor and the brake caliper at the top of the caliper. The gap can be measured using a feeler gauge. If the gap is 2 to 3 mm, then no further action is necessary. If the gap is approx. 10 mm, then the 16-inch rotors have been installed and the front rotors, brake pads and wear sensor must be replaced.

If replacement of the brake components is necessary, then refer to the appropriate Repair Instruction sections as shown above.

LABEL INSTRUCTIONS

This [NEW] Recall Campaign has been assigned code number 38. After the vehicle has been checked and/or corrected, obtain a label (MD 20-036) and:
A. Emboss your MINI dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);

B. Punch out code number 38 (2), printed on the label; and

C. Affix the label to the B-pillar as shown.

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Recall Campaign/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one, because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
