SUBJECT
Sunroof Sunshade Opens Spontaneously

MODEL
R55, R56 (Cooper Clubman and Cooper S Clubman, Cooper and Cooper S) equipped with the Panoramic Sunroof (option 403) and produced up to 7/2008

SITUATION

While driving with the sunroof sunshades in the fully closed position, one or both of the shades may begin to creep open. This movement typically occurs under heavy acceleration, heavy braking, or when driving over a rough surface.

CAUSE

Insufficient friction between the roller blind and the guide rail in the sunroof cassette

CORRECTION

Replace the end stop bumpers in the cassette with updated parts, and modify the roller blind if necessary.

PROCEDURE

1. Fully open both the sunroof and the affected roller blind.

2. Insert a flathead screwdriver (1) under the end of the guide rail (2) and rotate it to expose the end of the bumper (3). Press the bumper (3) out of the end of the rail.

3. Insert the new bumper (1) and press the guide rail down on to the cassette until it clicks into place.

4. Repeat this operation for the opposite side of the sunroof guide rail and, if necessary, for the other roller blind.

5. Retest the operation of the roller blind. If the roller blind continues to open spontaneously, continue with the following procedure.

6. Remove the affected roller blind per Repair Instruction RA 54 13 115 (Front) or RA 54 13 120 (Rear).

7. Unroll 13cm from the front of the roller blind. Gently roll both springs backwards around a large dowel, or something similar, to relive the spring tension from this part of the roller blind. E
When released, this 13cm section of the roller blind should be essentially flat.

8. Install the roller blind and verify that the problem has been eliminated.
