Replacing Camshaft
Special tools required:
^ 11 8 250
^ 11 8 370
Turn ignition off.
Remove spark plugs.
Remove wheel arch cover.
Remove cylinder head cover. Service and Repair
Remove left engine mount.
Using special tool 11 8 370 install to cylinder block (1) and engine mount fixing (2).
Disconnect camshaft sensor connector. Remove retaining bolt (1) and camshaft sensor (2).
Install hint:
Lubricate seal with a small film of new engine oil.
Pulse generator, sensor to cylinder head
M6 9 Nm
Rotate engine until the camshaft gear triangular timing mark is at 12 o'clock position (1).
For reassembly purposes paint timing chain to triangular timing mark (2).
The copper colored link has no relation to this process.
Note: the design of the timing chain cover will allow the timing chain to stay on the crankshaft gear, without skipping any teeth.
Do not rotate engine.
Remove hydraulic chain tensioner.
Hold camshaft gear with special tool 11 8 250 and slacken camshaft retaining bolt (1) but do not remove.
Remove special tool 11 8 250
Remove camshaft gear retaining bolt and remove gear and chain.
Install hint:
Check triangular timing mark on camshaft gear is still aligned with the timing chain link that was painted during dismantling.
Install camshaft gear on camshaft flange and refit retaining bolt with special tool 11 8 250
Camshaft gear to camshaft
M12 102 Nm
Caution: Do not use an impact wrench for tightening the camshaft gear bolt. Damage to the camshaft timing pin can result. Use a hand wrench only.
Remove rocker shafts.
Remove all camshaft bearing caps and remove camshaft.
Note: Orientation and number (1 - 5) of camshaft bearing caps.
Note:
1. Inspect camshaft bearing journals for damage and binding. If journals are binding, check the cylinder head for damage. Also check cylinder head oil holes for blockage.
2. Check the cam lobe and bearing surfaces for abnormal wear and damage. Replace camshaft if defective.
3. Inspect camshaft bearing caps for abnormal wear and damage.
1. Unworn area.
2. Actual wear.
3. Bearing journal.
4. Lobe.
5. Wear zone.
Measure the lobe actual wear (measurement of unworn area minus measurement of wear zone) and replace camshaft if out of limit.
Lobe wear.
Refer to Technical data. Specifications
Caution: If camshaft is replaced due to lobe wear or damage, always replace the rocker arms.
Install hint:
Using a feeler gauge (1), measure camshaft end float between end of camshaft (2) and cylinder head (3).
Install hint:
1. Lubricate the camshaft bearing journals with clean engine oil.
2. Install the camshaft bearing caps in their proper position.
3. Lubricate the roller portion of the rocker arms with clean engine oil.
