Removing and Installing Front Left or Right Spring Strut

31 31 000 - Removing and installing front left or right spring strut





Special tools required:
- 32 1 190 32 1 090 Removal Tool
- 32 3 090 32 3 090 Extractor





Note:
The test to ascertain whether the spring strut needs to be replaced can be carried out in two ways:

- While installed: Shock tester
- While removed: Shock absorber test machine





Necessary preliminary tasks:
- Remove wheel Removing or Installing Front or Rear Wheel.
- Remove brake caliper Removing and Installing/Replacing Left or Right Front Brake Caliper from brake console.





Detach wheel speed sensor and brake hose from brackets.





Cars with automatic headlight vertical aim control:

Release screw (1) and remove bracket.

Installation:
Make sure that the bracket is reinstalled in the correct position.





Cars up to 03/02:

Release nut (1), gripping with Allen key or open-end wrench.

Installation:
Replace self-locking nut.

Tightening torque 31 35 1AZ Front Axle - Stabilizer Bar.





Cars from 03/02:

Release nut (1), gripping with Allen key or open-end wrench.

Installation:
Replace self-locking nut.

Tightening torque 31 35 2AZ Front Axle - Stabilizer Bar.





Release nut and press tie rod with special tool 32 3 090 32 3 090 Extractor (1) out of steering knuckle.

Installation:
Replace self-locking nut.

Tightening torque 32 21 1AZ [1][2]Specifications.





Release nut and press control arm with special tool 32 1 190 32 1 090 Removal Tool out of steering knuckle.

Installation:
Replace self-locking nut.

Tightening torque 31 12 1AZ Control Arms and Struts (Front).





Important!
Support steering knuckle.

Release clamping screw on steering knuckle and detach steering knuckle from spring strut.

Installation:
Feed in spring strut and press steering knuckle upwards as far as it will go.

Insert screw.

Tightening torque 31 21 1AZ Front Axle.





Release nuts (1), supporting spring strut in the process and then remove spring strut.

Installation:
Replace self-locking nuts.

Tightening torque 31 31 1AZ Spring Struts (Front).





Cars up to 03/02:

Release nut (2), gripping with open-end wrench (1).

Remove stabilizer link from spring strut.

Installation:
Tightening torque 31 35 2AZ Front Axle - Stabilizer Bar.
