Removing and Installing/Replacing Steering Column
32 31 090 - Removing and installing/replacing steering column
Necessary preliminary tasks:
- Remove top section of steering column casing Removing and Installing/Replacing Upper Section of Steering Column Trim
- Remove lower section of steering column trim Removing and Installing/Replacing Lower Section of Steering Column Trim
- Detach steering spindle lower section from steering column Removing and Installing/Replacing Lower Section of Steering Spindle
- Remove steering wheel Removing and Installing/Replacing Steering Wheel
Important!
After assembly, perform a mechanical (steering lock, parking lock) and an electrical (e.g. ignition, radio etc.) function check.
Follow the notes and instructions given under Steering spindle lower section Removing and Installing/Replacing Lower Section of Steering Spindle when replacing the steering column.
Disconnect plug connection for collector ring and ring antenna.
When replacing steering column:
Release screws (1).
Installation:
Tightening torque 32 34 2AZ 32 34 Airbag and steering wheel airbag
Remove collector ring unit.
Cars with CVT:
Detach cable of selector lever/ignition switch interlock.
Installation:
Lock must engage in position.
Release screws (1).
Installation:
Replace screws.
Tightening torque 32 31 3AZ [1][2]Specifications
Observe the following when replacing the steering column:
- Modify ignition starter switch Service and Repair
- Modify lock cylinder Removing and Installing/Replacing Lock Cylinder for Steering Lock
- Modify steering angle sensor Service and Repair
- Stick on felt strips (see below).
Important!
When installing steering column, make sure that steering column (1) is located above lug (2).
Steering column (1) must rest uniformly on instrument panel carrier.
Important!
A felt strip measuring 15x125 mm must be stuck onto the new steering column (1) in area (2).
Felt strips must be ordered from the BMW Parts Service and cut to size.
Important!
A felt strip measuring 15x50 mm must be stuck onto the new steering column (1) in area (2).
Felt strips must be ordered from the BMW Parts Service and cut to size.
