8: Side Airbag

R50, R52, R53
Side Airbag

Installation location
The side airbags are installed in the side sections of the front-seat backrests.

Both Examples Shown:

Key Explanation
1 Airbag module in R50/R53
2 Airbag module in R52

Construction
Together, the side airbag and the gas generator form the airbag module.
The airbag module is installed in the armrest side section under the seat cover. The seat cover has a defined programmed separation point at the height at which the airbag module is installed.
R52
The side airbag on the R52 (Convertible) has a larger volume than the side airbag on the R50/R53. This means that the side airbag also provides protection for the driver's or passenger's head in the event of a side impact.

How it works
If it is triggered, the side airbag is pushed out through the designed rupture point. The side airbag expands between the door and the occupant.

Important:
Only fit approved seat covers.
Do not fit protective covers, seat cushions or other objects to the front seats, unless the items concerned have been specially approved for seats with integrated side airbags. Do not hang any items of clothing, e.g. jackets, over the front-seat backrests.
The airbag function could be severely impaired or even disabled.
