Removing and Installing/Replacing Brake Pads on Both Rear Disc Brakes

34 21 200 - Removing and installing or replacing brake pads on both rear disc brakes

Special tools required:
- 34 6 301 34 6 300 Brake Piston Tool
- 34 6 306 34 6 300 Brake Piston Tool
- 34 6 307 34 6 300 Brake Piston Tool
- 34 6 308 34 6 300 Brake Piston Tool

Important!
So as not to damage the surface coating, if possible do not mechanically clean the guide surfaces for the brake pads on the brake caliper holder. Instead, clean with brake cleaner BMW part no. 83 19 2 147 681 and apply a thin coating of Never Seez Compound brake pad paste BMW part no. 83 23 9 407 830.

Necessary preliminary tasks:
- Remove wheels Removing or Installing Front or Rear Wheel.

Important!
After completing the tasks, press the brake pedal to the floor several times to ensure the brake pads are firmly pressed against the brake discs.

If the brake pads are replaced simultaneously on the front and rear axles, the brake fluid level must be checked and if necessary the brake fluid topped up to the "MAX" marking.

Detach retaining spring (1).

Installation Note:
Attach retaining spring first at bottom and then at top.

Remove plastic plugs (2).

Unscrew guide screws (2).

Installation Note:
Only clean guide screws; do not grease.

Check threads.

Replace all guide screws which are not in perfect condition.

Tightening torque 34 21 3AZ 34 21 Rear Brake.

Important!
Tie up brake caliper to relieve strain on brake hose.

Remove brake pads.

Using special tools 34 6 301 34 6 300 Brake Piston Tool / 34 6 306 34 6 300 Brake Piston Tool / 34 6 307 34 6 300 Brake Piston Tool / 34 6 308 34 6 300 Brake Piston Tool fit brake piston in brake caliper as illustrated.

Important!
New brake pads may only be installed if the brake disc thickness is greater than or equal to the minimum brake disc thickness [1][2]34 21 Rear Brake (MIN TH) (not incl. perforated brake discs).

In the case of perforated brake discs, new brake pads may only be installed if the brake disc thickness is greater than the minimum brake disc thickness [1][2]34 21 Rear Brake (MIN TH).

Note:
The minimum brake disc thickness is configured in such a way that it lasts the life of a further set of brake pads (does not apply to perforated brake discs).

Check dust sleeve (1) for damage and replace if necessary.

Clean contact faces (2) of brake piston and apply a thin coating of anti-squeak compound.

Important!
The dust sleeve must not come into contact with anti-squeak compound as this would cause the dust sleeve to swell.

Clean contact faces (1 - 2) of tee heads and brake caliper housing and coat with brake pad paste.

Clean contact surfaces (3) of brake caliper with brake cleaner and apply a thin coating of brake pad paste.

So as not to damage the surface coating, if possible do not mechanically clean the guide surfaces for the brake pads on the brake caliper holder. Instead, clean with brake cleaner and apply a thin coating of Never Seez Compound brake pad paste.

Installation Note:
Make sure that the brake pad is fitted correctly in piston groove (1).

(The dust sleeve was removed only to clearly show all components.)
