Fluid Leak From Automatic Transmission
MODEL
R56 Cooper with N12 engine and automatic transmission (Aisin GA6F21WA)
R56 Cooper S with N14 engine and automatic transmission (Aisin GA6F21WA)
SITUATION
Customer complains of a fluid leak from under the vehicle and/or the vehicle fails to move.
CAUSE
A defective transmission input shaft seal or input shaft seal mating surface is allowing transmission fluid to escape from the torque converter area. Over time, the fluid level will be reduced to a critical stage where the vehicle will not move.
CORRECTION
Identify the leak. If it appears to be coming from the torque converter area of the transmission then remove the transmission and torque converter. Inspect the input shaft seal and seal mating surfaces for any damage.
^ If there is no damage to the mating surfaces, only replace the seal. For seal replacement procedure refer to RA 24 21 515. Reinstallation procedure in repair manual RA 24 40 012 for the torque converter must be followed to prevent damage to the pump impeller.
^ If damage to the torque converter surface is found, the torque converter will require replacement.
^ If damage to the transmission case surface (where the input shaft seal sits) is found, a complete transmission replacement will be necessary.
After the repairs have been completed the transmission fluid level must be checked and/or corrected. Refer to RA 00 11 500 for the fluid checking procedure.
The correct transmission fluid can be located in SI M00 02 02 MINI operating fluids.
