SUBJECT
Connecting Battery Charger

MODEL
R56 (Cooper, Cooper S)

INFORMATION
Depending on vehicle options, some vehicles have an IBS (Intelligent Battery Sensor) on the negative terminal of the battery. On these vehicles, connecting a battery charger directly to the battery will cause faults to set because the IBS misinterprets the battery condition.

To avoid this potential situation, the battery charger must be attached as follows:

- Positive battery charger clamp (red) (1) attach to the positive terminal of the battery.

- Negative battery charger clamp (black) (2) attach to the attachment eye on the transmission.

To avoid confusion, use this attachment procedure regardless of whether the vehicle has IBS or not.
