SUBJECT
Service Action: Retrofit of Crankcase Ventilation Breather
MODEL
R56 with N12 and N14 engine produced 09/18/06 up to 12/14/06
SITUATION
The electrically heated crankcase ventilation breathers were not installed in the affected vehicles. As a result, crankcase ventilation valve may freeze under extremely low ambient temperatures, when the excessive moisture accumulation is present in engine crankcase.
AFFECTED VEHICLES
This Service Action involves MINI Cooper vehicles with N12 engines and MINI Cooper S vehicles with N14 engines which were produced from 09/18/2006 up to 12/14/2006.
In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action Campaign, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System) or the Key Reader. Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.
The Chassis Number Ranges listed are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.
CORRECTION
Retrofit heated crankcase ventilation breather following the procedure below.
MINI Cooper with N12 engine
1. Place vehicle on the lift and disconnect vehicle's battery.
2. Remove intake manifold (RA 11 61 050) using the following steps:
3. Remove intake air filter housing and intake pipe at EDK throttle.
4. Disconnect engine wiring harness clips (1) from intake manifold.
5. Disconnect electrical connector at EDK (2).
6. Disconnect electrical connector (1) and purge inlet line from the purge valve (2).
7. Remove electrical connector from Vanos solenoid (1) and M8 nut (2) from both ends of manifold.
8. Disconnect electrical connector to Valvetronic motor (1), unclip wiring harness (2).
9. Remove two screws (2, 3) and the bracket (4) at the bottom of the manifold.
10. Release harness clip (10).
11. Disconnect pressure sensor connector (1), remove M8x30 screws (2, 3) and remove intake manifold.
12. On the intake manifold install new bracket (1) P/N 11 61 7 569 966 (using provided M6x20 hex bolt P/N 07 14 7 543 920), as shown on the illustration.
13. Replace the breather hose (1) with new part P/N 11 15 7 569 967.
14. Install electrical harness extension (1) P/N 12 52 7 568 769 into a connector on new breather.
15. Replace four gaskets P/N 11 61 7 528 173 in the intake manifold.
16. Reinstall intake manifold. Use new M6x30 hex bolt (P/N 07 14 7 543 380) for the lower manifold bracket, and two new M8 nuts P/N 07 14 7 543 353 for manifold locating studs.
17. Reconnect breather heating harness to the appropriate engine harness connector.
MINI Cooper S with N14 engine:
1. Remove the intake gaiter (1) with its two clamps (2).
2. Install new gaiter P/N 13 71 7 567 202 and two new clamps P/N 1371 7 565 965 and 13 71 7 565 964.
3. Connect heating harness to the connector (1) in the breather hose.
LABEL INSTRUCTIONS
This Service Action has been assigned code number 32. After the vehicle has been checked, and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (MD 20-036) and:
a. emboss your MINI dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);
b. punch out code number 32 printed on the label and,
c. affix the label to the B pillar as shown.
If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
