Campaign - Repair or Retrofit IBS Battery Sensor

SI M61 10 07
General Electrical Systems

December 2007
Technical Service

PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION ON ALL
AFFECTED VEHICLES THE NEXT TIME THEY ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE
OR REPAIRS AND PRIOR TO RETAIL DELIVERY.

SUBJECT
Service Action: Repair or Retrofit IBS Battery Sensor

MODEL
R56 (Cooper, Cooper S)

SITUATION
The IBS (Intelligent Battery Sensor) may not have been connected or installed. Therefore, the battery's state of charge cannot be detected and as a result, the electrical load reduction function of the energy
management system is inoperative. Consequently, the battery could be discharged to such an extent that the engine will not start.

AFFECTED VEHICLES
This Service Action involves R56 (Cooper and Cooper S) vehicles which were produced from July 8, 2007 to October 12, 2007.

In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System) or the Key Reader. Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The chassis number ranges listed are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.

PROCEDURE

Procedure 1 - Check if the IBS is installed and connect where necessary

Check if the IBS is installed on the battery. If it is installed, confirm that the connector (1) is fully connected or reconnect as necessary.

Recharge the battery.

Procedure 2 - Replace the battery negative cable with an IBS cable

If no IBS is installed, replace the existing battery negative cable with an IBS battery negative cable (RA 61 20 900 Disconnecting and connecting battery negative lead and RA 61 12 013 Replacing battery negative lead).

Recharge the battery.

Procedure 3 - Replace the battery negative cable with an IBS cable and replace the positive battery cable with an IBS sensing cable cable

If neither an IBS nor a red sensing lead from the IBS to the battery positive terminal is installed, disconnect both the existing battery positive cable battery and battery negative cable (RA 61 20 900
Disconnecting and connecting battery negative lead and RA 61 12 013 Replacing battery negative lead).

Install a replacement battery positive cable with IBS sensing, making the connections as follows:

^ (1) Positive battery connection X9235

^ (2) IBS positive connection X9230

^ (3) Vehicle wiring harness connection X2498

^ (4) Starter connections X6513 and X9135

^ (5) Alternator connections X7512 and X6524.

Install a replacement battery negative cable with an IBS cable.
Recharge the battery.

Procedure 4 - Replace the positive battery cable with an IBS sensing cable

If the IBS is installed, but there is no red sensing lead from the IBS to the battery positive terminal, replace only the battery positive cable, following the instructions in procedure 3 above for the removal
and installation procedure.

PARTS INFORMATION

LABEL INSTRUCTIONS

This Service Action has been assigned code number 35. After the vehicle has been checked and corrected if necessary, obtain a label (MD 20-036) and:

A. Emboss your MINI dealer warranty number in the middle of the label (1);

B. Punch out code number 35 (2) printed on the
label; and

C. Affix the label to the B-pillar as shown.

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
