Interior - Rattle From The Instrument Panel

SI M51 08 07
Body Equipment

November 2007
Technical Service

SUBJECT
Rattle from the Instrument Panel

MODEL
R56 (Cooper and Cooper S) produced up to 6/2007

SITUATION
A rattling or creaking noise may be heard from the top of the instrument panel when driving over rough surfaces.

CAUSE
The upper instrument panel cover was not installed properly and as a result, the retaining lugs were damaged. The damaged lugs allow the trim panel to move in relation to the cross car beam, creating this noise.

CORRECTION
Replace the upper instrument cover and ensure that felt exists on the forward locators.

PROCEDURE

1. Remove the upper instrument panel cover per repair instruction RA 51 45 050.

2. With the cover upside down, inspect the two retaining lugs (1) and the 3 forward locators (2).

3. The lower part of the retainer should be straight. If it is bent or damaged in any way, the cover must be replaced.

4. If any of the forward locators are damaged, the cover must be replaced.

5. Inspect the sheet metal tabs which the forward locators secure to when the cover is installed. If they are not wrapped in felt tape, apply felt tape to each of them.

6. Re-install the upper instrument panel cover and verify that the noise is no longer present.
