SI M54 07 05Special Roofs
December 2005
Technical Service
PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES THE NEXT TIME THEY ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS.
SUBJECT
Service Action: Check the Convertible Top Wiring Harness
MODEL
R52 (Cooper Convertible & Cooper S Convertible)
SITUATION
The wire going to Hall sensor 4 (HS4) of the convertible top wiring harness can become chafed due to an incorrectly positioned wire tie.
If a chafed wire makes contact with the convertible top linkage, an incorrect signal can be sent to the CVM (convertible top module). In some cases, the wiring harness may be completely chafed through. If this happens, it may not be possible to open or close the convertible top using the switch.
VEHICLES AFFECTED
This Service Action involves Cooper Convertible and Cooper S Convertible vehicles which were produced from 06/01/2005 until 07/09/2005.
In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.
The Chassis Number Ranges shown are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.
CORRECTION
Check if the wire tie is holding the wiring harness in the correct position. If necessary, reroute the wiring and secure it by using a new wire tie. If a wire is chafed through, the wiring harness must be replaced.
PROCEDURE
1. Check if the wire tie is in the correct position.
Preliminary task required:
Remove the trim for the rear window shelf by following Repair Instruction RA 51 46 003.

Example of a correctly positioned wire tie:
The wire tie (5) holds the wire (1) going to the HS4 Hall sensor connector (4) and the wire (2) going to the CVM together. No further repairs are required if the wire tie is correctly positioned and the wires are correctly routed.
Examples of incorrectly fitted wire ties.
Incorrect example A:
The wire tie (3) is secured to the convertible top wiring harness Wires (1) and (2) are secured too high.
1. Wire going to the HS4 Hall sensor connector.
2. Wire going to the CVM.

4. HS4 Hall sensor connector.
2. Repairing or replacing the wiring harness.
Note:
No further repairs are required if the wire tie is correctly positioned and the wires are correctly routed.
^ Only repair the wire if the damage is minor (e.g. wire installation is damaged, but copper strands are not damaged)
^ Proceed with step 3 if the wire routing and the wire tie position are not correct.
^ Replace the convertible top wiring harness if the wire is chafed through the installation (e.g. .wire installation and copper strands are damaged) by following Repair Instructions, RA 54 34 400 Remove and refit the convertible top wiring harness.
