Replacing Left or Right Control Arm


Replacing Left Or Right Control Arm
Special Tools Required:
^ 31 2 240
^ 31 5 140
^ 31 5 142
^ 31 5 144

Remove road wheels.

Use KDS to check wheel alignment.





Remove nuts (1) securing PAS reservoir bracket.

Replace self-locking nut.
Outer ball joints to lower arm
M12 x 1.5 Nut 56 Nm
Note: Use only once.





Remove inner ball joint from lower arm using special tool 31 2 240

Replace self-locking nut.
Inner ball joint to lower arm
M14 x 1.5 Nut 80 Nm
Note: Use only once.

Right hand side: Removal





Fit special tool 31 5 140 to lower arm as shown, relieved side of 31 5142 (2) should be as shown in (1). Holder 31 5 144 should be fitted against bush housing as shown.

Pull arm out of bush at the same time pull down on arm to clear inner ball joint.





Installation:
Fit tool to new arm as shown.
Locate central puller (1) on rear of 31 5 142, fit 31 5 144 as shown.





Lubricate bush center and hexagon of arm with Circolight or Turpentine substitute.

Locate hexagon in correct position in bush (1), push arm into bush with tool.





Pull down arm to clear inner ball joint. Continue pulling arm into bush until arm contacts end of bush (1).

Fit arm to inner ball joint. Remove tool.

Replace self-locking nut.
Inner ball joint to lower arm
M14 x 1.5 Nut 80 Nm
Note: Use only once.

Left hand side: Removal





Fit special tool 31 5 140 to lower arm as shown, relieved side of 31 5 142 (2) should always point to subframe. Location of central puller should be as shown in (1). Holder 31 5 144 should be fitted against bush housing as shown.

Pull arm out of bush at the same time pull down on arm to clear inner ball joint.





Installation:
Fit tool to new arm as shown.
Locate central puller (1) on rear of 31 5 142, fit 31 5 144 as shown.





Coat control arm pin and rubber mount bushing with low surface tension water.
Mixture ratio:
1 part soap to 20 parts water.

Locate hexagon in correct position in bush (1), push arm into bush with tool.





Remove bolts (1) retaining left and right compliance bush housings (2) to body.
Compliance bush housing to body
M10 Screw 59 Nm + 90° ± 15°





Pull down arm to clear inner ball joint.

Continue pulling arm into bush until arm contacts end of bush.

Remove tool.

Fit arm to inner ball joint.

Replace self-locking nut.
Inner ball joint to lower arm
M14 x 1.5 Nut 80 Nm
Note: Use only once.
