Replacing Safety Battery Terminal (SBK) (COOPER S)
CAUTION!
Observe safety instructions.
Investigate cause of triggering of safety battery terminal.
To do so, read out fault memory of airbag control unit.
Note fault messages stored in memory. Rectify faults.
Then clear fault memory.
Disconnect battery.
Left hand side only:
Remove nut (1), screw (2) and scrivets (3) securing underbody panel.
Remove underbody panel (4).
Remove rear muffler.
Remove bolts (1) securing heat shield to rear axle.
Remove nuts (2) securing left hand and right hand exhaust mounting brackets to body.
Tightening torque: 14 Nm
Remove nuts (3) securing heat shield to body.
Remove scrivets (4) securing heat shield to rear bumper carrier.
Remove heat shield (5).
Raise luggage compartment carpet to gain access to battery.
Release battery positive terminal cover (1).
Release locking screw (2) and disconnect battery positive terminal by moving back and forth.
Tightening torque 5 Nm.
Remove nut securing positive cable to battery positive cable terminal (3).
Disconnect SBK connector (4).
Release positive cable retaining clip from body stud (5).
Release positive cable grommet (6) from body.
Feed positive cable through body.
Release clips (1) securing positive cable to body and rear axle.
Release clips (1) securing positive cable.
Release clips (1) securing positive cable.
Remove left hand side front wheel arch cover.
Release clips (1) securing positive cable.
Remove intake filter housing.
Release clips (1) securing positive cable.
Release positive connection point housing cover (1).
Remove nut securing battery cables (2).
Tightening torque: 10 Nm
Release cables from housing (3).
Remove housing (4).
Install hint:
Fit new battery positive cable in the reverse order of the above. Start from the front, working rearwards.
Connect up the battery in reverse sequence. First connect the positive lead and then the negative lead.
Reset clock.
Initialise both window regulators.
