Camshaft: Service and Repair
11 31 001 Replacing Camshaft
Special Tools Required:
- 11 8 250
- 11 8 370
Necessary preliminary tasks:
- Remove spark plugs.
- Remove wheel housing cover
- Remove cylinder head cover
- Remove left engine mounting
- Remove hydraulic chain tensioner
- Remove rocker shafts
Fix special tool 11 8 370 onto cylinder block (1) and mounting of engine mounting (2).
Pull off plug connector of camshaft sensor. Unscrew mounting bolt (1) and remove camshaft sensor (2).
Installation note:
Thinly coat gasket with clean engine oil.
Tightening torque 13 62 1AZ
Turn crankshaft, until the triangular adjustment mark (2) on camshaft sprocket stands at 12 o'clock
Important: For the assembly, mark the timing chain on the triangular adjustment mark (2) with paint (1).
Mark vibration damper and gear case cover with paint.
Note: See graphic.
The brass coloured elements have no relevancy for the timing.
Fix special tool 11 8 250 onto camshaft sprocket.
Slacken central bolt (1).
Important!
Do not yet remove central bolt (1).
Make sure that the camshaft sprocket marking and the paint marking match up.
Remove central bolt.
Tightening torque 11 12 5AZ.
Remove all camshaft bearing covers and remove camshaft.
Note:
Alignment and number (1 - 5) of camshaft bearing covers.
Measure cam wear (measurement of the not worn area minus measurement of worn area) and replace camshaft if the result is outside the permitted value.

1. No wear area
2. Wear
3. Bearing journal
4. Cam
5. Wear zone
Installation note:
With a feeler gauge (1) measure the side clearance of the camshaft between camshaft blunt (2) and cylinder head (3).
Refer to Technical Data.
Installation note:
1. Lubricate camshaft bearing points with clean engine oil.
2. Fit camshaft bearing cover in the correct installation position.
3. Lubricate roll zone of the rocker arm with clean engine oil.
Important!
In case the camshaft is switched out due to cam wear or damage, the rocker arms are also to be replaced.
Assemble engine.
