SI M12 03 05
Engine Electrical Systems

June 2005
Technical Service

PERFORM THE PROCEDURE OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE INFORMATION ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES BEFORE CUSTOMER DELIVERY OR THE NEXT TIME THEY ARE IN THE SHOP FOR MAINTENANCE OR REPAIRS.

SUBJECT
Service Action: Reprogram DME on Cooper S with Automatic Transmission

MODEL
R52/R53 with W11 and F21 transmission produced 12/07/2004 up to 06/06/2005

SITUATION

The DME (MS5150) programming as originally installed could cause the automatic transmission diagnostic software to work incorrectly. In certain conditions, DME diagnostic software may fail to illuminate the Service Engine Soon warning light after two consecutive driving circles in the event an emissions relevant transmission fault is present. Instead, the Service Engine Soon will be illuminated after three consecutive driving cycles.

The DME diagnostic software error will not cause any drivability issues in the affected vehicles. New DME software is available.

AFFECTED VEHICLES

This Service Action involves R53 Cooper S and R52 Cooper S Convertible vehicles with W11 engines and F21 automatic transmissions which were produced from 12/07/2004 up to 06/06/2005.

In order to determine if a specific vehicle is affected by this Service Action, it will be necessary to utilize the "Service Menu" of the DCS (Dealer Communication System). Based on the response of the system, either proceed with the corrective action or take no further action.

The Chassis Number Ranges show are only for informational purposes and are not to be considered as the only deciding factor.
