Discontinuation of exhaust temperature sensor E39, E52/S62

Complaint:

The exhaust temperature sensor, part number 11 78 1 407 264, is discontinued without replacement.
Discontinuation in series: Production period: September 2000 up to series phase-out
Discontinuation for replacement: Production period: Series launch (July 1998) up to series phase-out

Cause:

It has been possible to replace the function of the exhaust temperature sensor by the inclusion of software in the form of a so-called exhaust temperature model in the DME MSS52 Motor Electronics.

Measure:

Procedure in the event of a malfunctioning exhaust temperature sensor for vehicles from series launch up to August 2000:
The faulty exhaust temperature sensor can remain in the vehicle. The DME control unit must be reprogrammed with the CD 23 or a higher version. This ensures that no trouble code is entered in the fault memory and that the "E-OBD" or "Check engine" warning lamp is activated for EURO vehicles and US vehicles respectively. If the faulty exhaust temperature sensor has to be removed on account of e.g. leaks, the DME control unit must also be reprogrammed with the CD 23 or a higher version and the screw-in point in the catalytic converter welded gas-tight. For this purpose, the exhaust system must be removed so as to prevent control units from being damaged by voltage peaks during welding.

Welding procedure:

Stainless steel welding, MIG or MAG

Welding rod material: 1.4551 or 1.4305 or 1.4370

Current intensity: approx. 80 A

Procedure for replacing the catalytic converter, cylinder bank 2 for vehicles from series launch up to August 2000:

The screw-in point for the exhaust temperature sensor in the catalytic converter in new parts is either welded gas-tight or no longer fitted.

Remove the exhaust temperature sensor and reprogram the DME control unit with the CD 23 or a higher version.

Procedure for replacing the engine wiring harness for vehicles from series launch up to August 2000:

The connection on the engine wiring harness for the exhaust temperature sensor is discontinued on new parts. Disconnect the cable outlet on the exhaust temperature sensor.
