Timing Chain: Service and Repair
Replacing Timing Chain
Special tools required:
^ 11 2 000
^ 11 8 250
^ 11 8 300
^ 11 8 370
Remove all spark plugs.
Remove cylinder head cover. Service and Repair
Remove pulse generator on camshaft.
Remove left engine mount.
Use special tool 11 8 370 install to cylinder block fixings (1) and engine mount chassis fixing (2).
Remove hydraulic chain tensioner.
Remove timing case cover.
Slacken camshaft retaining bolt (1) and hold camshaft gear with special tool 11 8 250
Remove closure plugs (2).
Remove camshaft gear retaining bolt and remove gear and chain.
Remove camshaft gear from chain and drop timing chain into crankcase.
Remove chain guide retaining bolts (1) and remove both guides (2).
Replace timing chain, camshaft gear and both guides.
Remove crankshaft gear.
Use special tool 11 8 300 in conjunction with 11 2 000
Replace crankshaft gear.
Install hint:
Shrink fit gear (1) to crankshaft.
Check locating pin (2) for correct position.
Heat gear to maximum 150°C with hot air blower or hotplate.
Caution: Do not exceed specified temperature!
Install hint:
Install timing chain guides.
Install guide retaining bolts.
Guide and tensioning rail to cylinder head
M8 28 Nm
Align triangular timing mark (1) on camshaft gear and crankshaft gear with copper colored inks (2) on chain.
Install timing chain on camshaft gear.
Install camshaft gear on camshaft flange and refit retaining bolt.
Camshaft gear to camshaft
M12 102 Nm
1. Camshaft timing mark aligns with single plated link.
2. Camshaft gear.
3. Left timing chain guide.
4. Right timing chain guide.
5. Timing chain tensioner.
6. Crankshaft gear.
7. Chain.
8. Crankshaft timing mark aligns with double plated link.
Caution:
^ If engine is not correctly timed up, damage will result.
^ Do not use an impact wrench on installation for tightening the camshaft gear bolt.
^ Damage to the camshaft timing pin can result.
^ Use a hand wrench only.
Install hint:
Install new sealing washers to cylinder head closure plugs and refit.
Pulse generator, sensor to cylinder head
