Replacing Rear Axle Carrier
Remove exhaust.
R53 only: Release rear half of battery main cable.
R50 and R53: Remove fuel tank.
Refer to bleeding brakes: ABS/ASC+T. ABS/DSC. Adjust hand brake.
Apply pedal prop and depress brake pedal slightly. This will prevent brake fluid from escaping from expansion tank after brake pipes have been disconnected (which would enable air to enter the braking system).
Disconnect brake pipes from hose (1) and subframe.
Rear brake pipe to hose connection 14 Nm
Release ABS sensor leads from subframe fixings.
Release cables from fuel tank (1).
Remove bolts securing hand brake cable to subframe (2) and remove cable from subframe.
Handbrake to subframe
M6 8.5 Nm
Remove bolts (1) securing anti-roll bar to subframe.
Anti-roll bar clamps to subframe
M8 19 Nm
Remove bolt securing the lateral link to trailing arm (1).
Lateral link to trailing arm
M12 x 1.5 64 bolt 100 Nm
Remove nut (2) and bolt (3) securing link to subframe.
Remove links.
Lateral link to subframe
M12 x 1.5 64 bolt 100 Nm
Support fuel tank and remove two rear fuel tank fixing bolts (3)
Support the subframe and remove the outer bolts (1) and inner bolts (2) securing it to the body.
Remove subframe.
Subframe to body (outer)
M12 x 1.5 132 100 Nm (1).
Subframe to body (inner)
M12 x 1.5 66 100 Nm (2).
Fuel tank to subframe and body
M6 22 - 28 Nm
Fit brake pipe clips (1) to new subframe.
