Pinpoint Test V: The Traction Assist Indicator Is Never/Always On

Normal Operation

The Instrument Cluster (IC) receives the traction assist data from the ABS module over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN) communication bus. The traction assist indicator flashes when the vehicle traction control is in active mode or is being controlled by the ABS module. The traction assist indicator turns on steady if the traction assist system has been disabled through the traction assist switch or if a fault condition exists in the system. The IC monitors the traction assist message from the ABS module and either flashes the traction assist indicator or turns it on steady depending on the condition. If the traction control message is missing for more than 5 seconds, the IC sets DTC U0121 in continuous memory and defaults the traction assist indicator on.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:

- Traction assist concern
- ABS module
- IC

PINPOINT TEST V: THE TRACTION ASSIST INDICATOR IS NEVER/ALWAYS ON

-------------------------------------------------
V1 CHECK THE TRACTION ASSIST INDICATOR OPERATION USING THE TRACTION ASSIST DISABLE SWITCH

- Ignition ON.
- Press the traction assist disable switch to disable the traction assist system while monitoring the traction assist indicator.
- Does the traction assist indicator illuminate?

Yes
If the traction assist indicator does not operate while in traction active mode, GO to V5.

If the traction assist indicator operates in traction active mode, the system is operating normally at this time.

No
GO to V2.

-------------------------------------------------
V2 CHECK THE TRACTION ASSIST DISABLE SWITCH INPUT TO THE IC

- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: IC DataLogger.
- Select the traction assist disable switch PID (TRAC_SW).
- Press and release the traction assist disable switch while monitoring the PID.
- Does the traction assist disable switch indicate enabled then change to disabled when the switch is pressed?

Yes
GO to V3.

No
REFER to Antilock Brakes / Traction Control Systems to diagnose the traction assist cannot be disabled. Testing and Inspection

-------------------------------------------------
V3 CARRY OUT THE IC INDICATOR LAMP CONTROL ACTIVE COMMAND USING THE SCAN TOOL

- Ignition ON.
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: IC DataLogger.
- Enter the IC active command mode and select the traction assist indicator (ACTIVELMP) active command. Command the traction assist active indicator on and off. Observe the traction assist indicator.
- Does the traction assist indicator illuminate when commanded on, and turn off when commanded off?

Yes
GO to V4.

No
INSTALL a new IC. REFER to Instrument Cluster (IC) Instrument Cluster (IC). TEST the system for normal operation.

-------------------------------------------------
V4 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM BOTH THE CONTINUOUS AND ON-DEMAND ABS MODULE SELF-TESTS

- Check for recorded ABS module DTCs from the continuous and on-demand self-tests.
- Are any DTCs recorded?

Yes
REFER to Antilock Brakes / Traction Control Systems. Testing and Inspection

No
GO to V5.

-------------------------------------------------
V5 RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs FROM BOTH THE CONTINUOUS AND ON-DEMAND IC SELF-TESTS

- Check for recorded IC DTCs from the continuous and on-demand self-tests.
- Is DTC U0121 recorded?

Yes
GO to V6.

No
INSTALL a new ABS module. TEST the system for normal operation.

-------------------------------------------------
V6 CARRY OUT THE IC SELF-TEST

- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: IC Self-Test.
- Clear the DTCs. Repeat the IC self-test.
- Is DTC U0121 present?

Yes
REFER to Information Bus to diagnose no communication with the ABS module.

No
The concern may have resulted from an intermittent network concern. VERIFY the brake warning indicator is operating correctly at this time.

If the brake warning indicator is not operating correctly, Go To Pinpoint Test O. Pinpoint Test O: The Brake Warning Indicator Is Always On
