Test B: DTC C1897 - Steering VAPS Circuit Loop Failure
Pinpoint Test B: DTC C1897 - Steering VAPS Circuit Loop FailureRefer to Vehicle/Diagrams, Power Steering Controls for schematic and connector information.
Normal Operation
The variable assist power steering (VAPS) module sends voltage to the power steering valve solenoid along circuit 114 (LB/YE), the voltage passes through the solenoid and returns to the VAPS module along circuit 115 (LG/BK). The power steering valve solenoid then controls power steering assist by regulating the flow of power steering fluid in the power steering pump. Depending on the amount of returning voltage, the VAPS module will be able to detect if the solenoid is functioning correctly.
^ DTC C1897 Steering VAPS Circuit Loop Failure - If the VAPS module detects an open, short to battery voltage or a short to ground, DTC C1897 will be set. This DTC will also set if the power steering valve solenoid does not reach the desired current for the desired power assist.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
^ Wiring, terminals or connectors
^ Power steering valve solenoid
^ VAPS module
