EXHAUST SYSTEM RATTLE/BUZZ WHILE DRIVING
FORD:
2005-2007 Five Hundred, Freestyle
MERCURY:
2005-2007 Montego
ISSUE
Some 2005-2007 Freestyle, Five Hundred, and Montego vehicles may exhibit a rattle or buzz noise during light acceleration. Noise may also be noticed from under the vehicle during cold start when engine speed is elevated.
ACTION
Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Attempt to verify the concern by driving the vehicle at speeds which get the engine RPM to between 1200-1300 RPM under light acceleration. The rattle may occur from a low speed up to 40 MPH (64 Km/h) such that engine speed is approximately 1200-1300 RPM.
NOTE
DO NOT ATTEMPT TO BRAKE TORQUE THE ENGINE TO VERIFY THE CONCERN, THE VEHICLE MUST BE DRIVEN AT SPEEDS WHERE THE ENGINE RPM GETS TO BETWEEN 1200-1300 RPM UNDER LIGHT ACCELERATION.
2. Verify that exhaust system is not contacting or grounding out against the body.
NOTE
WHEN CHECKING THE EXHAUST SYSTEM, TWO (2) Y-PIPE MASS DAMPERS HAVE BEEN RELEASED. THE LATEST DAMPER IS SAND FILLED WHILE THE EARLIER DAMPER IS FILLED WITH LEAD SHOT. THE LEAD SHOT DAMPER WILL PRODUCE A SMALL AMOUNT OF RATTLE, HOWEVER THIS IS NORMAL AND CAN NOT BE HEARD FROM WITHIN THE VEHICLE WHILE DRIVING.
3. Install the spring by strapping the spring around middle portion of flex coupling. (Figure 1)
