Output Shaft Seal

Output Shaft Seal

Special Tools:

Removal and Installation
1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.
2. Remove the exhaust flexible pipe.
3. Remove the 4 driveshaft-to-power transfer unit (PTU) output flange bolts. Disconnect the driveshaft from the PTU and position it aside.
- Using mechanic's wire, support the driveshaft.
- To install, tighten to 70 Nm (52 ft. lbs.).

4. CAUTION: Rotational torque of the PTU rear output shaft flange must be measured and recorded using a Nm (inch lbs.) torque wrench for correct pinion bearing preload when reassembled.

Using a suitable torque wrench, measure and record the rotational torque.

5. Using the special tool to hold the flange, remove the pinion nut.

6. NOTE: Index-mark the output flange to the pinion shaft.

Using the special tool, remove the output flange.
7. Remove the output shaft seal.
8. If necessary, remove the dust flange from the output flange.

9. CAUTION: Install the output flange to engage the spline as previously marked.

CAUTION: Do not overtighten the pinion nut.

CAUTION: Refer to the rotational torque previously recorded with the Nm (lb-in) torque wrench. If the rotational torque is less than specification, tighten the pinion nut in small increments until it is within specification. Do not tighten the pinion nut more than 3 Nm (27 inch lbs.) greater than specification, or the collapsible spacer will be damaged.

To install, reverse the removal procedure.
- Using the special tool, install the dust flange.
- Using the special tool, install the pinion seal.
