Removal and Installation

1. WARNING: The electrical power to the air suspension system must be shut off prior to hoisting, jacking or towing an air suspension vehicle. This can be accomplished by turning off the air suspension switch located in the luggage compartment. Failure to do so can result in unexpected inflation or deflation of the air springs, which can result in shifting of the vehicle during these operations. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.

If equipped, turn the air suspension service switch to the OFF position.

2. WARNING: If equipped with fire suppression system, depower the system. For important safety warnings and procedures, refer to Fire Suppression System.

With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.
3. Remove the rear brake disc.
4. Remove the adjuster by removing the brake shoe return spring and the adjusting spring.
^ A sharp-pointed tool such as a scratch awl is useful in removing and installing the springs.
5. Remove the parking brake actuator.
^ Push the parking brake shoes toward each other, then pull the parking brake actuator out. Unhook the parking brake cable end.
6. Remove the brake shoe hold-down springs.
7. Remove the parking brake shoe and linings.
8. Inspect the components for excessive wear or damage, and install new components as required.
9. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
^ Using anti-seize lubricant, lubricate the brake shoe contact point before installation of the rear brake shoes.
^ Lubricate the adjusting screw threads with anti-seize lubricant.
^ Using a suitable brake adjusting gauge, set the rear brake shoe and lining diameter to 0.5 mm (0.020 inch) less than the inside diameter of the drum portion of the brake disc.
^ Adjust the parking brake cable tension.
^ Check the parking brake for normal operation.
